There's a lot of great pizza in the Bay and State Flour is right up there. The ambiance, service, and starters are too. I went in with a friend during a busy summer Saturday last month and we were lucky to get a walk-up table without a wait. One downside: they don't take reservations. Elmwood gets busy, especially when something at Cal brings in the parents/alumni. Our server was great. We asked for the sausage to go on half of the pizza and they happily obliged. We didn't think about the salad. The server intuited that would be desired and simply put the dried prosciutto for the delicious salad when it came out so my dinner mate could enjoy it just as much as I could. When asked something specific about the wine, she said she was newer & didn't know but would ask someone else. Much appreciated.

If you’re in the neighborhood I think this is a solid option, although it’s not something so special that it’s worth a long trip. I tried The Chloe which I was impressed by the depth of flavor, but I would make some changes. The potato on the pizza is basically hiding and is overwhelmed by the other flavors. I think the potato should be put on top instead of bottom so that it crisps instead of the arugula. The classic pep is a decent pizza but nothing really stood out to me about it. The staff was all friendly and came by to check in multiple times and refill waters often.

Yes, the pizza! Grateful for extra mushrooms instead of sausage! But rarely do I review a salad: the apple endive salad with frozen/sliced/dehydrated prosciutto…MUAAA! The apples were perfectly sliced thin and the tarragon vinaigrette (not overdressed) with the blue cheese crumble and pistachios were proportioned and balanced to taste not visuals. Will try to recreate at home but next time, I’m…not…sharing!! 😂 Pizza is best straight out of the oven there and the service was actually service. ALL the staff were kind and patient. [The only thing about the atmosphere was that as cute as the chairs are, bags slip off so please add hooks nearby.]

Such fantastic pizza! The thin crust was perfect—light yet incredibly satisfying. I’ve honestly never seen pizzas so generously loaded with toppings. My husband absolutely loved his pepperoni and burrata pizza. The Gaia pizza I ordered was a wonderful vegetarian option—full of flavor and beautifully done. We also tried the Ollie without sausage; it was good, but it didn’t quite compare to the thoughtfully crafted vegetarian choice. The state flour salad was beautifully done too! All in all, we were extremely impressed and would wholeheartedly recommend this place. 🍕

Take the warmth of a local community-run kitchen, add in some killer flavors and textures, sprinkle on some coziness from the ample mood lighting and you’ve got the magic that is State Flour Pizza. I don’t think I could’ve asked for a better experience at State Flour Pizza Co, and that includes the 30 minute wait time for a table. This is the kind of place that hires the neighborhood teens in the summers while still taking the time to source all fresh ingredients. Consensus for favorite was split between the mushroom-sausage and green goddess pizzas, but the margherita and hot honey pepperoni were almost as good. Apple salad gave some much needed freshness to the table. This pizza place is as perfect for a family dinner as it is for a first date, and is just as likely to have a table of college friends as it is a post-conference debrief. That’s because it’s designed for the community, so it attracts the community.
